The short answer: buy the fiber optic ambient light kit, $39.99, if you want a thin line in the dash and door seams. It plugs into the 12V socket. It is not a roof starfield, and nothing in the kit goes on the ceiling. Free worldwide shipping and 30-day returns.
Want colour on the floor instead? The RGB LED strip kit is $54.99. Want stars on the roof? That is the USB roof star projector at $17.99, not this kit. Keep any of them dim or off while driving, and check your local rules.
This guide covers the questions people ask before buying ambient lighting for a car: which type, 12V or USB, how hard it is to fit, app control, brightness, legality, warranty and delivery. Which type should you choose?
You want it to look built in
Choose fiber optic. The light comes from a thin line pushed into the gap between panels, so you see the glow and not the cable. Our 12V fiber optic ambient lighting kit has 4 m of fiber over 4 light lines, each cut to length. The 64-colour USB fiber kit comes in six sizes from 3 m to 8 m. Fiber needs a seam to sit in: if a bank card slides a few millimetres into the gap along your dash or door, it will work.
You want the footwells to glow
Choose LED strips or panels. Our RGB LED strip kit has four strips that stick under the dash and along the footwell edges and runs from the 12V socket. The RGB footwell kit uses acrylic and leather panels that sit in the footwells, which gives a broad wash of light rather than a visible line. You can order it with USB or 12V power. For a glow under the dash only, the hidden LED light bar tucks under the dash edge and throws light down at the floor, away from your eyes. It runs on 5 V at 3 W and reacts to sound.
You want the least effort
Choose a USB plug-in light. The centre console neon lamp is a slim colour-changing line for the console, in 3 m or 5 m with a button or app controller. For the ceiling, the USB roof star projector plugs into a USB port and projects a red starfield, with nothing to fit.
You want one steady colour, no app
Choose an EL strip. The interior neon strip is a single ice-blue line in 1 m, 3 m or 5 m that bends to follow your trim. The door edge mood line is 3 m of EL wire in ice blue or white for the door trim gaps. Both run from the 12V socket.
12V socket or USB?
Both work. Pick by which socket you have free and how you want to route the cable.
- 12V socket (cigarette lighter): our 12V fiber kit (9 W), the RGB LED strip kit, the interior neon strip and the door edge mood line (1.5 W). The plug stays in the socket while the lights are on. If you also charge a phone from that socket, you need a USB kit or a splitter.
- USB (5 V): the 64-colour fiber kit (3 W), the centre console neon lamp, and the dual-colour moving strip (4 W). Using USB keeps the 12V socket free for a charger.
- Either: the RGB footwell kit comes in a USB version and a 12V version.
On most cars, both the 12V socket and the USB ports switch off with the ignition, so the lights go off when the car does. If yours stay live, unplug the lights when you park. We worked through the numbers in do LED lights drain a car battery?. None of our kits need to be wired into the car. If you are weighing hard-wiring or battery lights instead, see car ambient lighting: USB, wired or battery?.
How hard is it to install?
- 12V fiber optic kit: about 10 minutes for most cars. Plug in, tuck the fiber into the seams, trim the ends. No tools needed.
- 64-colour USB fiber kit: one line per run you want lit, along the dash and door cards. Choose the kit size by how much of the cabin you want to light.
- RGB LED strip kit: strips stick on with adhesive backing that comes off cleanly, and the control box hides wherever you like. No wiring and no trim removal.
- RGB footwell kit: panels sit in the footwells. Nothing is spliced into the car and no trim has to come off.
- Door edge mood line: tuck it into the door trim gap and cut it to length, about five minutes a door.
- USB plug-in lights: plug in. The console lamp is adhesive backed.
The one thing that can stop a fiber kit is trim with no gap at all. If that turns out to be your car, you can send it back within 30 days.
App control: what you get
- 12V fiber kit: Bluetooth app for iOS and Android. Full RGB, brightness, speed and music sync. There is no remote.
- 64-colour USB fiber kit: app control with 64 colours and sound sync.
- RGB LED strip kit: Bluetooth app and an IR remote. A built-in microphone handles sound sync, so it works with any stereo.
- RGB footwell kit: Bluetooth app for colour, brightness and mode, sound sync, and a welcome-light effect when the door opens.
- Centre console neon lamp: choose the button version or the app version.
- Interior neon strip and door edge mood line: no app. One steady colour.
How bright is it?
Ambient lighting is a soft line or wash of light, not a reading light. It looks best from dusk onwards and you will barely notice it in daylight. The app-controlled kits let you turn the brightness down. The look depends more on where you point the light than on how bright it is: aim it at a surface, never at your eyes. Our product pages do not publish lumen figures, so we do not quote any here.
Is ambient lighting legal while driving?
Rules differ between countries and regions, so check what applies where you drive. Many of the rules we have read focus on the same points: the light should not distract the driver, should not be visible from outside the car or mistaken for an emergency vehicle, and should not flash while you drive. The safe habit is to keep interior lighting dim or off while driving, and to save sound-sync and moving effects for when you are parked. Frequently asked questions
What is the best type of car ambient lighting?
It depends on the look you want. Fiber optic gives a thin, built-in line along the dash and doors. LED strips and footwell panels give a wash of colour on the floor. Small USB plug-in lights are the quickest to set up. Choose by look first, then by whether your car has a free 12V socket or USB port.
Is fiber optic or LED strip better for car ambient lighting?
Fiber optic looks more like factory lighting because the line sits inside the trim seam and you see the glow, not the LEDs. LED strips and panels are better for lighting the footwells and usually have sound sync. Fiber needs a panel gap a bank card can slide into.
Should I get a 12V or USB ambient light kit?
Pick the socket you have free. A 12V kit takes the cigarette lighter socket while it is on. A USB kit leaves that socket free for a charger. Our fiber optic lighting comes in both: a 12V kit with 4 m of fiber, and a 64-colour USB kit from 3 m to 8 m.
How long does it take to install car ambient lighting?
Our 12V fiber optic kit takes about 10 minutes for most cars, with no tools: plug in, tuck the fiber into the seams and trim the ends. USB plug-in lights take seconds. Strip and footwell kits stick or sit in place, with no wiring or trim removal.
Can I control car ambient lighting from my phone?
Yes, on app-controlled kits. Our 12V fiber kit, 64-colour USB fiber kit, RGB LED strip kit and RGB footwell kit all have phone apps with colour and music or sound sync. The interior neon strip and door edge mood line have no app and stay one colour.
Is car ambient lighting legal while driving?
Rules vary by country and region, so check your local rules. Many rules focus on not distracting the driver, not being visible from outside and not flashing. The safe habit is to keep interior lighting dim or off while driving and to use moving effects only when parked.
Will ambient lighting drain my car battery?
Not if the socket or USB port switches off with the ignition, which most do. If yours stays live, unplug the lights when you park. Our 12V fiber kit draws 9 W while it is on and the 64-colour USB fiber kit draws 3 W.
Do you ship to Sweden and the EU, and is there a warranty?
Yes. Shipping is free worldwide on every order and tracked. Orders usually ship within 1 business day and delivery usually takes 5–10 days. You get 30-day returns, opened or not, plus the legal guarantee for faulty goods: at least two years in the EU and three years in Sweden.
