Fiber Optic Star Headliners: What They Cost and How to Fit One

Behind the roof lining of most cars built since roughly 2000 there are curtain airbags, their inflators and gas ducts, crash sensors, and wiring looms. A curtain airbag that has been pierced, obstructed, or had its wiring disturbed may fail to deploy in a side impact, or deploy incorrectly. This is a life-safety system, not trim.

This guide describes one method only: lowering the headliner far enough to see what is behind it before anything passes through it. Never push a needle, awl, pin or fibre through a headliner you cannot see behind. Keep every tool, fibre, cable, adhesive and piece of equipment clear of curtain airbags, their inflators and ducts, crash sensors and vehicle wiring at all times.

If you cannot confidently identify a curtain airbag, its inflator, its gas duct, a crash sensor or a wiring loom in your own car, do not attempt this fitting. Have it done by a qualified trim specialist or auto electrician. It is usually about an hour of their time, and it is the right call — there is no shame in it and we would rather say so than sell you a weekend you regret. Always follow your vehicle manufacturer’s guidance, and check your handbook for the location of side-curtain airbags before you begin.

A star headliner is the fibre-optic ceiling you have seen in Rolls-Royce interiors and in every third car edit on TikTok. Hundreds of tiny points of light in the roof lining, usually with a slow twinkle. It is the single most dramatic thing you can do to a car interior, and it is achievable at home — provided you do it with the headliner down and your eyes on what is behind it.

What it actually costs

Two routes worth considering, plus one that is not a fitting at all:

  • Professional installation: typically $800 to $2,500 depending on the car and the strand count. The headliner comes out, gets drilled, and goes back in. Two to three days at a shop. If your car has curtain airbags and you are not confident working around them, this is the route to take.
  • DIY with the headliner lowered or removed: $30 to $80 for a kit, plus a weekend. This is the only DIY method we will describe, because it is the only one where you can see the airbags, sensors and wiring you need to stay clear of. Done patiently it looks the same as the professional job.
  • No fitting at all: a roof projector throws a similar effect with zero modification to the car, nothing pierced and nothing routed. See the alternative at the end of this guide.

What is in a kit

An LED light engine, usually RGB with a remote or app, and a loom of fibre optic strands. Strand counts run from about 150 to 600. Strand diameters are typically 0.75 mm and 1.0 mm mixed together, which is what gives the varied star sizes rather than a uniform grid of dots.

The light engine is the part worth paying attention to. A twinkle module makes the difference between a star field and a ceiling full of dots.

How to fit one with the headliner lowered

Before step 1. Do not start until the headliner is lowered far enough that you can see the roof structure behind every area you intend to work on, and until you have positively identified the curtain airbags, their inflators and gas ducts, the crash sensors and the wiring looms. Nothing — no tool, no fibre, no cable, no adhesive, no bracket — goes near any of them. If you cannot identify them with confidence, stop and use a qualified installer.

  1. Plan the pattern first. Sit in the driver seat at night and look up. Mark roughly where you want density. Real star fields are uneven, so resist the urge to space them evenly. Plan your pattern to avoid the airbag line entirely.
  2. Lower the headliner and inspect. Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s procedure to drop the roof lining far enough to see behind every area you plan to work on. Identify the curtain airbags, inflators, gas ducts, crash sensors and wiring looms, and mark a generous exclusion zone around all of them. Work only in the clear areas you have positively identified. Disconnect the battery and allow the manufacturer’s specified stand-down time before working near any airbag component.
  3. Find a home for the light engine. Mount it in the boot or under a seat, where it has airflow, stays reachable, and is nowhere near an airbag component. Do not mount it behind A-, B- or C-pillar trim — curtain-airbag inflators and gas ducts run through those pillars on most modern cars.
  4. Run power. Most kits are 12V or USB. Route the cable well clear of airbag components, gas ducts and existing looms, and secure it so it cannot migrate into them later. Never route a cable through or across an airbag deployment path.
  5. Make the holes from behind, in cleared areas only. With the lining down and the clear areas confirmed, form each hole from the back of the headliner where you can see exactly what is on the other side, and feed the strand through from behind. Keep the awl, needle or drill inside the areas you identified as clear.
  6. Trim flush. This is the step people rush and it is the one that matters. Snip each strand so it sits level with the fabric, not sticking out. Proud strands look like wires. Flush strands look like stars.
  7. Work in sections. Twenty strands, check the effect, adjust, continue.
  8. Refit properly. Return the headliner using the manufacturer’s clips and fixings, confirm nothing you have added touches or obstructs an airbag, duct, sensor or loom, and check that no warning lights appear once the battery is reconnected. If an airbag warning light stays on, stop driving the car and have it checked.

The four mistakes that ruin it

  • Even spacing. A grid reads as Christmas lights. Cluster some, leave gaps.
  • Strands left long. The single biggest giveaway of a rushed job.
  • One strand size. Mixing diameters is what creates depth.
  • Too many, too bright. 200 well-placed strands beat 600 badly placed ones. You can always add more.

Will it damage the headliner?

The holes are needle-width and the fabric closes around the strand, so on a standard fabric headliner it is effectively invisible if you ever remove it. Perforated or suede-effect linings are less forgiving. If your car is leased, have it done professionally, or use a projector instead.

The no-commitment alternative

If dropping your headliner is more than you want to take on — and for a lot of people it should be — a projector throws a similar effect with zero modification, nothing pierced and nothing routed near an airbag.
